Keyboard issue is much more likely. Try an external usb keyboard and test. If that works as expected then it's the keyboard, if not then probably software.


Also, try starting up in Safe Mode and test to see if that works as expected. (It will take a lot longer to reach the Login screen because it does some cache cleaning and disk checks first. But after that it should be much the same as working normally.
