Problems with Samsung SSD since update to 10.15.4

Hi,

since upgrading to macOS 10.15.4 i encountered a problem regarding my Samsung SSDs:

When writing to them i got an error 100006. Then the SSD becomes not mountable:

Then i have to format the SSD. After formatting (APFS or Journaled) and copy files to it, i got a writing error after 10-20 GB.

I tested two different SSD's. These SSD's are connected over an USB-Hub or adaptor.

I was able to find a workaround. SSD crashes only when you're writing a folder with many items (thousands in my case). If you put this folder in a container (e.g. ZIP archive or *.dmg image) then it gets copied to an SSD like a whim. Just moved 50GB like this. The SSD drive is HFS+ unencrypted. I didn't make it work with encryption. I didn't try with APFS either.

Anyhow, even having a workaround, this is still a BIG issue and needs to be fixed by Apple.

Hello Zauberspiegel,

I see that you're getting an error on both of your SSD's after updating the software on your Mac. I certainly understand your concern and wanting get this resolved quickly, and I'd be happy to look into this with you.

Let's have you try to use Disk Utility to try to repair both of your storage devices. The article below provides the steps to take to use Disk Utility, if needed.

Repair a storage device in Disk Utility on Mac

Afterwards, try to mount either of the storage devices in both safe mode and test user.

How to use safe mode on your Mac

How to test an issue in another user account on your Mac

Let me know how this goes and if there are any changes during these steps.

Have a great day!

I've started experience similar issues.

My existing Time Capsule backups have been fine since they're differentials, but any large file transfers (including fresh Time Machine backups) to a locally attached USB drive usually fail with a variety of errors. At first I thought my Samsung T5 SSD was giving out, but then I had similar errors on another conventional non-SSD drive.

Sounds like this might be a known issue, hopefully to be fixed in 10.15.5?

Disk Utility is useless in this regard. Reformatting the disks make no difference.

I tell ya what, it's been a rough few releases since 10.15.2 dealing with APFS issues and Time Machine problems :(

I have exactly same issue. With both Samsung and Intel external SSDs. On my other machine which is 10.15.2 I don't have such problem with these exact drives. One of the drives became unwritable. I had to back up the data, erase and re-format my both external drives. I see there's supplemental update queued, will now try installing it to see if that fixes the issue.
