iCloud photos to USB but not a .zip file

How can I copy photos from Icloud to a USB without it saving as a .zip file to iCloud Drive? I am trying to create some family year books and our photos are all on iCloud. When i attempt to copy them to the USB it will save it as a .zip file link to iCloud drive only. Unless I save one photo at a time then that works. Considering I need to save 7 years of photos that is not an option.

The way it appears you are doing it is the correct and only way: Download iCloud photos and videos

Once the zip file is downloaded though, you can unzip it to reveal the original photos with your computer then add them to the USB drive:
