Why is TextEdit ridiculously slow?

I'm doing some data bending with photos which involves opening a .BMP file in a text editor, editing the text at random then saving to produce some interesting glitchy results.

My problem is that when I open a photo in TextEdit it is impossibly slow to use. Every time I even try to scroll or select some text it beachballs for about 30 seconds. It's impossible to use. Why is this such an issue? Granted, it's a high resolution image and the text file is absolutely mahoosive but I have a 2019 MacBook Pro with the 6-core i7... shouldn't really be a problem should it? Especially considering that my 4-core i7 Windows laptop can open up the same file in Notepad++ and scroll through it an edit it like butter with no problems.

Am I missing a trick here?

Cheers :)

My sentence should have read —

<TextEdit.app is a handy catch all application (but NOT a true Text Editor—just for the record)>

or a photo editor for that matter.

Why not do this edits in a photo app more well suited to handle .BMP file (?)

Have you resolved this issue—please advise...

Hard to reproduce all the details here—

TextEdit.app is a handy catch all application (but to a true Text Editor—just for the record)

There still should be no issue, either plain txt, rtf or rtfd

To trouble shoot further you can:

Try a SafeBoot https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201262

Takes noticeable longer to get to the login screen, does a 5-15 minute disk repair before it fully boots up, and certain system caches get cleared and rebuilt, including dynamic loader cache, etc. Login and test. Reboot and test will take a little longer as caches get rebuilt.

This test will tell you if third party interference; extensions etc are not loaded in safe boot mode.

Test issue in another user (or guest user) account  https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204443

This will tell you if it a universal issue or isolated to your user/admin account.

If this is isolated to your user account you can get a good look at your System config. for conflicts or issues, you can download/run this trusted utility https://etrecheck.com

If you need help interpreting the report you can post it here in its entirety in the "Additional Text" box in the editing toolbar below, in your reply.

You can set its preference to "Allow full Disk Access", with this you get a digest of issues from the last 7 days that are saved in your system.
