problem upgrading macbook air to catalina

Hello,

running a 2017 MacBook Air with High Sierra (10.13.6), trying to upgrade to Catalina. Each time I go to App Store and ask to download, it spins on the "Calculating..." step and never progresses past that. Also, on App Store preferences are set to automatically check for updates and always download new updates. I know this is an upgrade, but I thought I'd be told automatically.

Just in case this is relevant, I found a copy of the Mojave Installer on the hard drive (not my computer), when I tried to run it the system said it was corrupted and couldn't be used. System seems to be working fine, though, i.e. no corruption. I need to upgrade to Catalina to make some apps work.

You're doing it right. You have to open the App Store and download it.

Use this link: Get macOS Catalina

If it's not working restart your Mac. If it's still not working, restart your Mac in "Safe Mode": Use safe mode to isolate issues with your Mac.

You might as well drag the Mojave installer to the Trash.

Be sure to read Apple's upgrade instructions How to upgrade to macOS Catalina and follow all its steps, including the necessity to create a backup: Learn how to back up your Mac.
