After receiving a message thread from a friend, all other people from that thread are now in my contacts. How can I keep this from happening?

Two different Message threads for same Group I have a Group with two other friends. I sometimes send my Messages to this group from my iPhone (an XR on iOS 14.2) and sometimes send or receive Messages to this group on my MacBook Pro (on Catalina 10.15.17). For some reason, I have two different "threads" for this Group. Sometimes the Message is in one of the threads and sometimes it is on the other "thread". Why aren't they "combined" as only 1 thread? How do I fix it? What causes the two separate threads? Is there something wrong with my Message settings? Or something wrong with my Contacts? My Contacts are synced in iCloud.

Unified threads on Messages on iPad and iPhone but not Mac I recently created a new user account on my Mac. Once I had set it up to use Messages in iCloud, there are two contacts whose messages are now separated into two separate threads (for their phone number and email address). This did not happen on the user account I used previously nor does it happen on the Messages app on my iPhone or my iPad. I have tried disabling Messages in iCloud on my Mac and on my other two devices and then re-enabling it but the situation remains: the threads are unified on my iOS devices but not on the Mac

If you open the Contacts app do you see them? They are probably just in the recent contacts memory in the message app. They will disappear on their own.

No, they are not visible there. They show up when I select a contact for a new message. A contact who sent me a "thread" now has six other phone numbers appended to it. Before my last software update I could delete them now I cannot.
