Bluetooth on iPhone says iPad not supported

My iPhone 8+ no longer connects to iPad via Bluetooth. The phone detects the iPad and vice versa but no connection. iPad says to be sure phone is on and within range. iPhone says that iPad not supported.

I have most recent updates on each device.

I have turned each device off and on. I have reset network settings. I have toggled airplane mode on and off. I have toggled Bluetooth off and on.

What else can I try? All suggestions appreciated.

Directly pairing one iOS device to another is not supported, and never has been.

Most features that require bluetooth between an iPhone and iPad do not require they be paired.
