customizing suggested passwords when the site is picky
The IRS wants a special character in its password. My suggested passwords have none. How can I change the format the Mac is suggesting?

To answer your question Safari's "strong password generator" has no option to change the format.
I already suggested that Apple provide some means of doing that, but you're welcome to add your own opinion: http://apple.com/feedback/macos.html
There are plenty of customizable password generators around, such as https://passwordsgenerator.net
Thanks John Galt —you are correct, Safari does keep you from copy & paste, or amending the psswd generator.
There certainly are plenty to choose from, to name a few more...

Just add in a special character to the suggestion.
Type it on the end of the string. Do the same for the conformation—Safari/Keychain will remember the psswd
You don't have to use the suggested password. Just create a password that meets the requirements.
Thanks to both of you. I did send two requests to Apple, John Galt, one about this problem, and the other about what happens when you need to change the password, and the site sends an email and sends you to a fresh Url— you can sign in with your new password. But because it’s on another page, it doesn’t get remembered.
