watchOS 6.2 draining battery fast

I have an Apple Watch Series 4. It has always had good battery life. I usually go to bed at the end of a full day with greater than 30% battery left, sometimes greater than 50%. I updated to watchOS 6.2, and next day my battery was dead by the middle of the day. I tried turning off and on, but it didn't help. I tried erasing the Watch and reinstalling the OS. Seemed back to normal the next day. But every day since then, the battery life has gotten worse and worse. It can no longer make it through the day.

My Series 4 battery performance continues to fluctuate day to day. Some days it performs like it used to, other days it dies hours before I go to bed. I have tried unpairing and re-pairing twice, I've done several resets, but nothing has helped. I am unwilling to try setting it up as new and losing everything. I am waiting for Apple to release an update to fix this.

Waited to upgrade to 6.2.1 on my Apple Watch4 and apparently not long enough. Did the upgrade after it charged on Wed night (2 days ago) and now the battery is running out 9 hours faster than before. Based on this thread, it's a software problem. I have too much security software on my phone for work to factory reset it and I'm NOT spending hours reloading and validating it over an Apple software upgrade problem.

Tried to get support and the website said that "Apple support options are currently limited. Thank you for your patience and understanding."

Why push out an upgrade when your support isn't available? $1500 for a watch and phone + Apple Care and we get THIS?

Please try what I did. It actually wasn’t that painful. I didn’t reset my iPhone. I only “unpaired” my Apple Watch (Series 4) and then restored it from its backup. Took only a couple minutes to unpair and maybe half an hour to restore. I don’t remember exactly how long it took but I was pleasantly surprised how quickly it was done. After first upgrading to 6.2 and 6.2.1 my day was ending with the battery in the low 30s and one day in single digits. After doing what I just described a week ago today, I consistently end my 17 hour days in the low 50s which is slightly better than I used to have prior to 6.2. I understand from other messages here that that hasn’t worked for everyone but I’m happy to say it did for me.

I am having this issue over the last few days on WatchOS 6.2.1

Usually my routine is I wake up around 7am / use the open goal outside walk for around an hour / then just usual notifications through the day (maybe one timer for a minute or so and checking stand goals) and by the evening, 11pm time I'm at around 40/50% charge.

Since updating, the last three days I have only reached until about 3pm with the 10% battery notification going off. I am using my Apple Watch Series 5 Titanium (less than a year old) with an iPhone 11 Pro Max on the latest iOS version.

I have factory reset/repaired the apple watch, and the same issue is still there.

Hi

I think I’ve cracked the issue ... try this :-

do a complete set up again on both Apple watch and iPhone but keep things like, share your location and things like share with Apple and app developers OFF .... the other thing I’ve done done is to switch emails from push to manual...... over the last 7 days I’ve had Zero battery drain, and taking the watch off charge at midnight and at 7am in the morning I’ve still got anywhere from 100% and to its worst 97% .... and I’ve had my watch last 2 days (48hrs) and still had around 30% to 40% left and that’s with low to med Usage the only downside is that you obviously can’t use things like maps and weather unless you turn the location services on, but I prefer my watch battery to last like this to how it was with it going flat with 7 to 8 hrs

(I’m rocking a Apple Watch series 5 44mm and a iPhone 11 and my with is rocking a Apple iPhone 5 38mm and a iPhone se, both are showing similar results in much better battery life )

Battery draining issue has been solved with my Apple Watch series 5 44mm and my wife’s Apple Watch series 5 40mm ....

Heres what I have done to solve the issue

1 Set both Apple Watch and iPhone back up as new devices

2 in the process of setting both the Apple Watch and iPhone, decline sending info to Apple and App developers, also decline turning on location services .

3 Turn off all push email notifications and turn it to manual only

both myself and my wife have been seeing a huge difference in battery life ... I’m taking my watch off charge around midnight and I still have (at it’s worst) 97% around 7am and by midnight I’m getting (at its worst) 75% remaining and that’s using the watch in low to med usage

this is day 9 and everyday I’ve been getting very similar results (my wife’s 40mm is getting very similar results over the period of time also)

also I’ve done a test over 48hrs without charging the watch and at the end of the 48hrs I’ve still had 39% left which is a massive improvement over the just 8hrs with the battery issue, before I did what I done.

Yes it’s a pain When you have to manually get emails and use maps and weather (from the phone as not tried it on the watch ) but just having that nice battery life makes everything worth it

3 of my colleagues are also testing my possible solution to the battery drain with their Apple watches and since I’ve told them about what to do, they all have been getting the exactly the same results over the last 5 days as we are, so this all looks promising in this terrible issue

Hope this helps ;)

That is not a solution. I am not turning off features I did not have to turn off only a week ago. Push notifications should not be a luxury for battery life, nor should I have to restore my phone when Apple mess something up with an update.

I will just have to wait patiently for a update to fix this problem, I encourage everyone to do the same and not disable some of the reasons the bought the watch in the first place for some battery life we had before this update.

May 8, 2020 5:29 AM in response to LoneWolfHeaven

Glad you got a solution that worked.

Since I posted mine seemed to be fixed it still seems to be as well.

As mentioned in that post I removed the app ( My Radar ) and no more weird things going on.

I still get notifications from that app, on my watch as well as on my phone and that works fine.

I don't have to have the actual radar showing via watch, as long as the notifications work its good for now.

Whenever Apple stores open back up, I may allow that app to be linked back to my watch and if issues re-occur then go to Apple store to let them check it out in store.

But until then I'm leaving things as they are now, since all seems stable again

I am having this same exact issue on my Apple Watch 4 that I've had for less than a year. I can normally go an entire day without needing any recharging. By the time I go to bed (approx 14 hours of wearing) the battery is typically in the 40-60% range. However, since Sunday (5 days ago) my battery is almost dead by late afternoon/early evening.

Additional to this, I have been using my old Apple Watch 2 since buying the Apple Watch 4 while I sleep for sleep tracking. When I put that watch on before going to bed, it is always 100%. Normally when I wake up (6-8 hours) it is still around 75% battery. Now that watch is dead by 3-4am (approx 4 hours). I have theater mode on while I sleep, so there is no screen waking at all. This issue also started Sunday.

I have tried hard-resets as well as complete wipe and restarts, but neither of those solutions worked. There is definitely something going on with the software. Its not hardware related, as both of my watches are suffering the same issue.

This was only suggested as a short term (part) solution ! (Im sure that the majority of us would rather have a much longer battery life, than the 8-10 hours that we were previously getting, rather than worrying about a few minor features that most of use don’t use anyway ) besides I’ve read that the beta version watchOS 6.2.5 is no better with battery life and bearing in mind watchOS 6.2.1(17T539) was also have meant to solve battery life issues in which it clearly hasn’t !!??

incidentally one of my colleagues has been using the always on display since he’s adopted my (Part) solution and he’s basically using very minimal extra battery life than from not having the always on display on.

if your happy with the 8-10 hours that your watch provides before it dies then that’s all good but I myself am much happier that coming up to the end of my second day with no recharge within that 48hrs and knowing that my watch will still have enough juice to see me well into the 3rd day

I was having the same issue for over 2 weeks and tried every solution posted except for one and that was to change the name of my watch in General-about

Apple health listed so many instances of the same watch (name) and previous watches I owned with the same name and because I couldn't figure out which was my active watch, I gave it a new name.

My watch is now operating normally and the battery remains at 99% for about 6 hours and that's exactly where it should be until I go out exercising.

This is my preliminary post because I haven't seen my watch behave in a positive way for the past few weeks - I will repost tomorrow to let everyone know if my watch makes it through the night without shutting down.

Posted 5/11/2020 at 4:51PM

lastly, normal charge time for my watch is 3pm every day - I wear my watch through the night.

May 12, 2020 11:23 AM in response to Zomp

Followed your steps and day one, not very good results....off the charger at 4:45am and it’s 2:21pm and down to 49%. I used to make it until bed time, 9/10/11pm but that doesn’t happen with my Apple Watch 5 anymore. This is new and the drain is horrible....

I deleted ah the old instances of the watch and only running one profile for phone and watch now.

I’ll give it more time and see if it settles down any!!

May 12, 2020 12:20 PM in response to Imex99

it was going good until it failed again.

Have you tried reset network on your phone? i came across a post who said that his Bluetooth stack is corrupt or some sort of tech jargon word he used. Anyhow, i don’t know how to “re-stack” BT other than a reset. just curious if you tried and if it too was a fail
