Find my Friends
I recently started sharing my location with a friend. I was wanting to know does FMF only
update when they unlock their phone and use it or does it update when they move slightly ? Is the location accurate or is kind of sketchy ?

The Find My Friends app has been replaced by Find My [Devices] app in the newer versions of iOS.
Your friend will be able to check on your location on demand as long as your iPhone has an active connection to the internet via a cellular or a WiFi connection. Doesn't matter whether your iPhone is locked or unlocked.
The accuracy of the location, in my experience, is within a 100 - 200 feet radius most of the time. At times it can be accurate within 1000 feet radius or more.
