Ghost FaceTime calls to Mac in the middle of the night

Hi! I’m a little freaked out. Last night/early this morning, I gotten woken up to my FaceTime ringing. Confused and disoriented from getting woke up at 1 am, I grab my phone to see who’s calling. No one. The ringing stopped and I went back to sleep.

An hour later (maybe sooner), it all happens again. I wake up to FaceTime chimes at 1:45 am, check the phone, nothing. Now I realize the sound is coming from another room. I get up, go to the office, and see that the ringing is coming from my Mac.

The FaceTime app is open but there is no sign of a call coming in except for the ringing sound, again and again, until I finally CMD+Q the app to shut it up.

Freaked out, I open FaceTime again to check the recent calls to see who called. No one. My last call was from the previous day.

Any idea what’s going on here? I checked Twitter and other support forums assuming that I’d see that this was some major Apple bug, but nothing. My Mac and iPhone are on the same Apple ID, so I don’t understand why my computer rang when my phone didn’t.

The closest I found was this support article from 2019 that feels like it could be a similar issue but it unresolved: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/250446382

Any leads of help is appreciated. It seriously freaked me and my wife out to get woken up by ghost FaceTime calls in the middle of the night. Thanks.

Hey there, nixian,

Thanks for stopping by the Apple Support Communities. I understand you're concerned over what sounded like incoming FaceTime calls in the middle of the night, but with no recent calls showing in the app. I'm happy to help.

The reason for the incoming call notification to your Mac could have been prompted by a number of reasons. If you have concerns, I can suggest taking the following steps:

  1. Quit any open apps: Quit apps on Mac - Apple Support and restart your Mac: How to turn your Mac on or off - Apple Support.
  2. Check for, and install, any available macOS updates (which will also install any available FaceTime updates): How to update the software on your Mac - Apple Support.
  3. Back up your Mac using Time Machine: Back up your Mac with Time Machine - Apple Support and reinstall macOS: How to reinstall macOS from macOS Recovery - Apple Support.

Cheers.

Hi Sterling, thanks for the reply.

What are the "number of reasons" you mention?

No other apps other than FaceTime were open when the call came in. Mac OS is up to date. I did a complete reinstall of the operating system a month ago.

I appreciate any further insight anyone might have.

Thanks.
