Display Issue - Horizontal blue lines in application windows

As you can see from the image below I have blue horizontal lines appearing within my Chrome application window

2019 Macbook Pro 16

The application is the latest build of Chrome Version 80.0.3987.163 (Official Build) (64-bit)

It has happened 3 times now - each time appear to be after the laptop has been left running overnight.

Not it is not the full display affected only the application window. I've also only seen this in the chrome browser (I've also posted this to the Chrome support site) it sometimes goes away simply by killing Chrome but this time required a reboot.

Anyone seen this before - got any ideas??

o, so here is what i found out. The problem is solved when you disable hardware acceleration in the settings of all the apps with this issue. like chrome, safari, Franz, and all other having the option to disable hardware acceleration. Not desired, since videos lag or just not perform as you might expect from a 2600 euro laptop.

This issue is thus related to the video card in the system or the drivers, will call apple support for a solution.

did a new NVRAM reset calling with support. It took longer now to restart, aparently it is important the keys are pressed immediately after restart and be held untill after you see the apple logo. Some fan noise the first minute which is now ok and overall it seems fixed. Will update here if the problem is not fixed, no news is good news.

I have the same issue; chrome, MSTeams, WhatsApp & safari are all affected. I didn’t see this post, and exchanged my 16inch MBP for another one however, the issue is still persistent on the replacement.

Clearing NVRAM does nothing. Disabling GPU on MSTeams caused it to freeze so it is also pointless.

I have also noticed that it happens only after the display is woken from sleep, if that helps anyone in the short term. I was convinced it was the hardware however we all have different graphics cards.

Apple really needs to try to resolve this issue.

As mentioned above, I was having the blue line issue first. but later also realised it was constantly restarting overnight.

A week or two after I reported the blue line issue, my MB didn't turn on anymore after what I assume must have been an automatic update to MacOS 10.15.4. I had to send it to the repair shop and they had to replace the motherboard.

I don't have the blue line issue anymore, but the MB still restarts itself overnight when I put it to sleep. Now I'm shutting it down every night instead.

I have to say I'm a bit disappointed as I didn't experience any of these issue with my previous MBs. Really hope it's just a software (and not hardware) issue they'll be able to resolve soon.

I'd still recommend not to update to 10.15.4 as this has reportedly bricked some other people's MBs recently as well, not only mine.

So I have an older "Apple LED Cinema Display 27-inch (2560 x 1440) AMD Radeon Pro 5500M 4 GB graphics" external monitor hooked up to my computer all the time. I'm starting to wonder if this monitor is somehow causing this to happen? I'm also using a cheeper dongle to attach the monitor. What kind of monitors and dongles do other people have hooked up? Does this happen to anyone when there is no external monitor?

Reinstalling the OS might have helped. I did that yesterday and left the computer on overnight. It didn't restart like it normally does and I haven't seen any blue lines yet. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Also another data point, I worked in safe mode all day the day before (painfully slow) and never saw a random restart or blue lines. I think that's supposed so suggest that it isn't a hardware problem? Anyway, for what it's worth.

Hi all, I chatted with a representative and Apple. He said that they are aware there is a problem and they are confident it's not a hardware issue. I do believe it's caused by the last update and are working on a fix for the next release. If the issue continues after the next update, then I (we) should definitely contact them again. Meanwhile, there are a few things we can do to minimize the inconvenience.

1) Shut down your computer instead of letting it sleep over night.

2) If putting you computer to sleep, unplugging it, wait a few, put it to sleep, then plug it back in.

3) Turn off "Enable Power Nap" in both the Battery and Power Adapter tabs in the Energy Saver in Settings.

4) Turn off "Prevent computer form sleeping..." in the "Power Adapter" tab (in the same place).

5) Turn off the "Enable Power Nap..." in the "Battery" tab (in the same place).
