AppleTV Homesharing

Ok, does anyone know how to resolve the common issue of the Homesharing Screensaver only loading blank, black images? I have tried everything short of completely restoring to factory defaults. I can get a slide show to run, but screen saver and Preview only display black screen (appears to be transitioning, but no images).

I hope the format of this question is now acceptable to the moderator of this forum.

I've been searching this issue all day and there are plenty of examples across the net. Frankly similar issues have happened before, usually after software updates. A quick google search, and the fact that within an hour I had a reply stating the same problem would lead one to believe there is a problem. I understand I can restore. I have a mesh network, 3 AppleTVs, 2 iPads, 4 iPhones, an iMac, a receiver with AirPlay and a smart hub all on my network, anytime I can find a solution that doesn't require resets I prefer it. I'm not trying to be difficult or crowd the sub. This is a legitimate, known issue. I was hoping someone here had advice, that is all.

Everyone has this problem and APPLE IS AWARE OF IT. I have an open ticket with them. However, sometimes there are advanced users who can also fix problems. This is a bug in iOS 13.4, but maybe someone in the world has a work around. By the way, this defect applies to the second to the latest Apple TV (Apple TV HD) or the first thick one with flash memory.

Thx

I spent all day on it. It is a problem on AppleTV HD & AppleTV 4K (I have both). Apparently it is widespread. It seems to be a problem with the way the photo cache is made on the host computer. I can do a Slideshow, but screensaver cache isn’t working. I did send a message to Apple.com/feedback also, so I don’t get in anymore trouble ;)

Usually message boards are a great place to find other users who don’t want to just reset their systems, and have to rebuild/repair them, every time there is a problem.

I am also experiencing similar issues (including a black-blank screen). I have been using the Apple TV 4K (ATV) Home Sharing Screensaver feature for 2 years without issue. I don't stream photo’s; I stream my iTunes album art library (images). Recently on 3-10-20 I had added more album art into iTunes so I refreshed my Home Sharing settings (PC & ATV) to include the new images (had no issues). On 3-24-20 I updated the ATV firmware to 13.4 (17L256). At that time, I still didn't have any screensaver issues. It

wasn't until 4-19-20 I once again added more album art to iTunes and again refreshed Home Sharing did I then experience a glitch. My album art screen saver is set to display as tiles (28 individual album art images) on the screen. The noticeable glitch was now displaying some of the images 4 times each. After refreshing Home Sharing in hopes of fixing the glitch I then received a black-blank screen. It appears (in my case) everything Apple (screensavers) still works. All the album art created by iTunes (iTunes downloads) still works as a screensaver using Home Sharing, but all the album art I downloaded from

the internet and loaded into iTunes doesn’t work (now a black-blank screen) like your personal photo’s. One thing I did notice after changing the screensaver display options (in my case I switched from cascade to flipping the image) I could make out/see a shadow /or placeholder of the image on the black-blank screen. I have tried the usually troubleshoots, ATV restart, unplugging the ATV, and signing out and back into both accounts (PC & ATV). I have only had to reset the ATV back to factory defaults one time during the firmware update 13.0 disaster. It’s a major pain. If that becomes the case, make sure you jot down (take a pic) of your primary settings. I’m in hopes that a firmware update will fix this issue like it did the Sleep Timer fiasco. It did take 3 firmware updates after the fact to convince Apple they had an issue left behind from 13.0.

As of today my ATV 4K is still displaying a blank screen instead of my homesharing photos from a desktop Mac. I tried a factory reset which doesn’t resolve the problem. They won’t preview either. They will appear (after a while) in the photos/albums selection screen but ATV does not remember them. Changing to the Aerial screensaver was also problematic as it showed the same one over and over, however, after the factory reset it did straighten this out. One clear distinction after the factory reset was that a different home screen appeared from the usual multiple icon screen (which is still there but appears after another press on the remote). There must have been some behind the scenes update which has now broken ATV. Feedback to the development team has been given so let’s hope an update is imminent.
