Since the start of the discussion here, I think I was able to workaround the issue by doing 2 things:

  • Disabling Power Nap on System Preferences -> Energy Saver;
  • Changing the hibernatemode value to 0 (default is 3) (value 0 may be not suitable for everyone).

Since I've done these two steps, I didn't have any unexpected shutdown, even with an external display connected.

I don't know if this workaround is 100% reliable, but I've left my MacBook turned on for the last 7 nights, and I didn't have any unexpected shutdown.

Don't know if you are still having this issue, but I figured mine out [fingers crossed] yesterday. There are actually 2 places to disable sleep mode. Both are in System Preferences>Energy Saving. There you will see 2 tabs - Battery and Power Adapter. Both have a slider that should be set to Never. Both also have check box options. Under Battery, I deselected "Put hard disks to sleep when possible," and under Power Adapter, I selected "Prevent Computer from sleeping automatically when the display is off." I came in to find that my computer had not crashed for the first time in weeks!! Of course in doing this, I will be sure to restart my computer (or shut it down) more regularly so as not to diminish the quality of the battery until they find a permanent fix for this crash issue. Hope this helps.

This is definitely a bug. Got a brand new MBP 16" in early April and this started happening about 2 weeks in. I'd notice the machine would be very hot even if in "sleep" mode. I disabled "Power Nap" and it seems to have stopped happening. I didn't do anything to "hibernatemode". We'll see if it lasts. If not I'll call customer support and post the outcome here.

@OFong -

I've gone through this exact same process and I'm still waiting for the official fix. I've found that the crash only happens when our laptops are in sleep mode for greater than 2 hours and plugging into a power source.

My only work around has been unplugging my laptop prior to putting it to sleep.

It's a crappy work around but the only thing I've found to work.

It would certainly help if everyone who is affected by this problem always sends their crash reports to Apple.

Also we should complain to Apple Support (who most certainly does not have a solution, but this puts it at least on their radar) and complain about it using the product feedback.

It's a reproducable error which for me happens every time if I wait long enough. Even with a fresh install.
