My Macbook Pro 16" is crashing while its at sleep, when it's getting charged. Can someone please help me with this issue.

panic(cpu 0 caller 0xffffff801e691b2c): Sleep transition timed out after 180 seconds while notifying clients about upcoming system capability changes. Suspected bundle: com.apple.iokit.IOGraphicsFamily. Thread 0x74.

Since the start of the discussion here, I think I was able to workaround the issue by doing 2 things:

  • Disabling Power Nap on System Preferences -> Energy Saver;
  • Changing the hibernatemode value to 0 (default is 3) (value 0 may be not suitable for everyone).

Since I've done these two steps, I didn't have any unexpected shutdown, even with an external display connected.

I don't know if this workaround is 100% reliable, but I've left my MacBook turned on for the last 7 nights, and I didn't have any unexpected shutdown.

Same issue for me on a brand new 16" MacBook Pro. And this has been continuing to happen even though I sent this laptop in for repairs. Repair was to replace the logic board and Touch ID board. I've had this "repaired" machine for 5 days and it is doing exactly the same. Clearly, that wasn't the fix, unless I got a 2nd faulty logic board and/or Touch ID board. Same crash-while-sleep issues even through a hard-drive wipe and full clean OS re-install.

For me, it seems to only happen when machine sleeps with power cord plugged in -- but I have not studied that facet much.

I dunno that's really necessary. I have power nap enabled on my 16" and have never experienced a kernel panic. Have you considered that it could the software you're using that might have corrupt files that are causing the panics? Have you done a complete erase, reformat and install of macOS Catalina without installing additional apps so you can test it?

I am also getting this same crash message after I start the computer.

panic(cpu 0 caller 0xffffff8015291b2c): Sleep transition timed out after 180 seconds while notifying clients about upcoming system capability changes. Suspected bundle: com.apple.iokit.IOGraphicsFamily. Thread 0x74.

What I have discovered is, when I put the computer on sleep and it isn't plugged in, it won't crash when I open the lid again. However, if it is plugged in and I do the same, when I open the lid I get the message the computer restarted due to a problem.

I haven't seen a panic in several weeks after fiddling with some of these checkboxes, and this is what my Energy Saver settings are currently set to:

I routinely use the machine both plugged in to a dock and on battery, and sleep and unsleep on battery pretty regularly.

So it seems pretty clear to me that the issue here is that it's about waking from sleep while plugged in, and that this is a software bug, not something that Support can help with. I don't think this is a hardware issue so those of you worried about having an expensive paperweight can probably just wait for a software update.

For those still experiencing it - definitely send in those crash reports so that apple can see this problem is happening in the wild!

I have had the same issue for over a month. I have several calls with apple. Have gone through a whole wipe and reinstall + reset of SMC and PRAM. The issue still persist. I have had my MBP 16 since December and it was all fine until upgrading to 10.15.4 supplemental update. I have been reluctant to send it to Apple in this pandemic. I am hoping the next update will fix it.

I continue to have this issue after 10.15.5, but I also don't think it started for me until 10.15.5. I'm usually in clamshell mode and connected to power when I sleep the laptop and turn off the external monitor. Started waking up to a powered off Mac with a crash report, I think a week ago. Same kind of error: panic(cpu 0 caller 0xffffff801b69167c): Sleep transition timed out after 180 seconds while calling power state change callbacks.

Thanks for the suggestions. I chose to take it one step at a time, so I first turned off the power nap setting.

Although it appeared to improve the situation; i.e., every time I let the notebook go to sleep, I was able to wake it up. Only once did I have to press the power button to wake it up because the trackpad nor the keyboard would do it. But it did wake up as expected.

Unfortunately, just a few minutes ago, I woke it up again just to find out that it had actually rebooted due to the following problem: panic(cpu 0 caller 0xffffff801c816487): "ATY,Boa::setPowerState(0xffffff86b1dff000 : 0xffffff7f9fdb6d88, 2 -> 1) timed out after 45940 ms"@/AppleInternal/BuildRoot/Library/Caches/com.apple.xbs/Sources/xnu/xnu-6153.101.6/iokit/Kernel/IOServicePM.cpp:5296

Obviously, there's still some power-related-problem lurking inside this $5K machine of questionable reliability. So sad.

I'll try to work on your second suggestion tomorrow.
