Since the start of the discussion here, I think I was able to workaround the issue by doing 2 things:

  • Disabling Power Nap on System Preferences -> Energy Saver;
  • Changing the hibernatemode value to 0 (default is 3) (value 0 may be not suitable for everyone).

Since I've done these two steps, I didn't have any unexpected shutdown, even with an external display connected.

I don't know if this workaround is 100% reliable, but I've left my MacBook turned on for the last 7 nights, and I didn't have any unexpected shutdown.

"I'm demanding a refund, and if they're wise, they'll allow it or they're losing a 20+ year professional user."

No offense but good luck. Apple is a trillion dollar valuation company that sells millions of computers monthly worldwide. You're sounding like you're punishing a mom and pop store that can't afford to lose you. Just use your warranty to get a repair but if you're past the 14 day return period don't expect a refund and I don't think Apple will care if you threaten to move to another brand later. Take care of the issue. Making demands of a refund to a company this size is not gonna get you far.

For a little while now, I've been operating under these conditions to avoid crashes and the "sleep transition timed out after 180 seconds" panic upon startup.

  1. I've set the "Prevent computer from sleeping automatically when the display is off" to on;
  2. All other Energy Saver settings in Power Adapter are off;
  3. I have MBP connected to a OWC Thunderbolt 3 Dock while I'm using it, which is all day;
  4. When I'm done working, I power off the MBP, and disconnect it from the dock.

Just a few weeks ago, I paid almost $5K for the MBP. I'm furious and disappointed at the diminishing quality of Apple's hardware. I guess they're now more interested in pumping out Apple TV+ content, which I think is pretty good, by the way.

I returned my first one and got a new one. The new one does not seem to be affected. Here are my observations:

My first one was a spacegray base model and the error occurred on both a time machine restore as well as a complete fresh macOS installation on 10.15.4. If I waited long enough (maybe 2-3 hours, definitively over night) the kernel panic happened every time. I've also had problems when I first tried to restore my time machine backup. The mac out of the box had a lower version than 10.15.4 so it offered to update first on the initial setup. This update always failed and I wasn't able to restore my backup until I manually erased the disk and did a clean install. After restoring my time machine backup I again performed a complete fresh install but the error was still there.

So I returned this macbook.

I've ordered a new one in silver this time, also base model. The update to 10.15.4 during the initial setup worked without a problem on the first try. I've restored the same time machine backup and it didn't crash again. I've tested it 2 times after 2-3 hours and over night. The previous one always crashed over night. This one did not crash yet.
