MacBook won't boot up -- fails towards the end of the progress bar

MacBook was working fine. Left in sleep mode and now it won't boot up. I've been trying all morning. Tried starting it in recovery, resetting the PRAM and SMC and nothing. It switches on with the power button but towards the end of the progress bar it just switches off.

What else can I try? In lockdown it's not like I can take it to an expert.

If it's of any consequence, there's a DVD in the optical drive.

MacBook, macOS 10.13

Force eject the DVD by pressing and holding down the trackpad button, whilst your Mac is restarting.

When booted to Recovery HD did you run Disk Utility First Aid.
