MacBook Pro 16 keeps restarting in sleep

Hi I've got this error for about a week now and it always happens when the laptop is plugged in to the 87W Apple USB C charger from my old MacBook Pro 15" (2017). It's quite annoying as when I resume from sleep the laptop would boot and I have to reopen my browser windows. If anyone could help I'd appreciate knowing what the issue is, if it's something software or hardware related. Thanks!

I have the same problem since the last OS update. I have a brand new MBP16 Core i9 with 32GB RAM that worked well for about a month until the latest OS update.

I wrote to Apple and I am sending them the crash reports every morning, but I haven't heard back from them yet. Reminds me of the nasty PC/Microsoft days...not good!

It is a Catalina issue for sure. I managed to isolate it to the use case of this crash occurring when the MBP16 is connected to my external QGeeM USB-C hub, through which I charge my MBP16 and connect to my desktop monitor via HDMI (I disconnected all other USB peripherals from the hub to eliminate any other possible root causes). The MBP16 works flawlessly when it is not connected to external power or the USB-C hub and it goes to sleep and wakes up without a hitch. It will consistently crash and reboot in the AM if it is connected to the USB-C hub overnight.

Apple - we need a new Catalina patch ASAP and your silence is confidence-quenching...please address ASAP! We are losing faith here...

Thanks “Old Toad” that workaround seems to work for now.

-Checked “Prevent computer from sleeping automatically when the display is off”

-Un Checked “Put hard disk to sleep when possible”

-Un Checked “Enable Power Nap”

Tested several times throughout day and over night and never once crashed/restarted with external display attached.

I have had the same experience with my MacBook Pro 16. I was very comfortably working from home with my Mac cradled in clamshell mode, connected to the same external monitor I had used for years with two prior MacBook Pro 15s. Then, around the time the last Catalina update hit, my MBP16 started to reboot itself after waking from sleep. I've tried resetting the SMC, resetting the PRAM, I've run First Aid on the disk, all to no avail. Apple's support agents tell me the next step is for me to wipe the drive and start with a fresh install of Catalina which I am reluctant to do, largely because most of what I've read from others in my boat, it won't have any effect.

The whole thing is very disappointing.

Unfortunately you will need to follow the Apple process. EVentually you will get to the point where they want to replace the logic board. The problem is in the OS and you can find many people in this thread and other forums have been through the process without much luck. I wish you well on the journey of spending alot of your time trying to make an Apple product function.
