Ipad connectivity

I recently purchased an iPad that is still in process of being delivered. It has cellular capability. Additionally I have an iPhone with AT&T service. I would love to be able to call and text with this iPad using the same number as my regular phone but AT&T says this is not possible without switching the SIM card back and fourth. They say they can only add a line to my existing plan and provide me with a "data only" SIM card. I just wanted to get your opinion regarding this advice, if there is anyway to share my number with my current phone. I want to use my iPad cellularly even if my phone isn't near me.

If you have an iPhone with a cellular airtime contract, if both you iPad and iPhone are logged-in to iCloud with the same AppleID and Continuity features are configured, you should be able to make and receive calls from your iPad. Voice Calls are made and received from your iPad using the FaceTime App.

If WiFi Calling is also configured, and supported by your Carrier, you can make and receive calls from your iPad when your iPhone is either elsewhere or turned off.
