Macbook Pro Webcam has bad quality

Why does my 2018 Macbook Pro, with the touch bar, have bad camera quality? I was expecting a company like Apple would have a good quality camera to chat with your loved ones.

Hey there, Miguel,

Thanks for posting in the Apple Support Communities about the concerns you have regarding your MacBook Pro built-in camera. I know it's important to have good quality pictures and video, and I am happy to help!

There could be a few things, like your network connectivity or even other apps and processes on the computer, that may be affecting the quality of your camera. To help us troubleshoot, I'd recommend starting with the following steps:

  1. Quit any open apps: Quit apps on Mac - Apple Support then restart your MacBook Pro: How to turn your Mac on or off - Apple Support
  2. Check for, and install any available updates for your macOS software, and any apps you use with your camera: How to update the software on your Mac - Apple Support
  3. If possible, see if the issue occurs on another network (for example, if you're using Wi-Fi, see if happens over a cellular hotspot if you have one available, or another Wi-Fi network).
  4. If you have any security software on your Mac, try temporarily disabling or removing it.
  5. See if the issue continues in a new, test user account: How to test an issue in another user account on your Mac - Apple Support

If the issue continues, don't hesitate to respond back. Please provide some additional information if you do, including the answers to the following questions:

  • Does the issue occur in all apps you use with the camera, or just one?
  • Does it occur with all people you video chat with, or just one/some?
  • Does the issue occur in an app like Photo Booth, where you're not video conference calling, but just recording video?

Best!

TBH, you see, win- ahem. Other non-apple laptops usually have a display that's around 4 mm thick, but this one's around 1mm, so there's a large difference in terms of what you can fit in it. Further, many laptop camera modules(disassembled circuitry) are at least 3 mm thick, so you really can't blame Apple for their thin profile. It's like trying to fit a 3.5 SATA HDD in a MacBook Pro that's really thin. It's not possible.

To be honest for the people that are using Zoom for work or school meetings, it won't even matter. You can have the best 4K camera in your MacBook but the person on the other end of the Zoom call will have a low-grade camera and this is extremely common. You'll still have a poor experience because of their camera, not yours.

you've entirely missed the point

Yeah the webcams are bad and COVID-19 is making everyone finally realize it... it's just that computer manufacturers know that consumers often overlook the camera when they're looking to buy a computer so why beef it out when most are not aware.

It's hard to believe it's a problem in terms of the thinness of the display assembly like hugomimihu claims, if you take apart any iPhone, you'll notice it's entirely possible to fit that front-facing camera assembly into the an area even as thin as the lid of a MB. Especially in the last generation MacBooks, there was plenty of room there. 720p cameras are mid-2000s era tech.
