Lost access to iPhoto

I have just upgraded to Catalina. It did warn me that iPhoto was 32 bit but I was never led to believe I wouldn't be able to access iPhoto at all after the upgrade. I haven't backed up my photos for a year! Does this mean I have lost all of the past 12 months' worth of photos? Is there any way of gaining access to them? If I have lost this access then Apple really does need to clearly warn customers to back up their photo library BEFORE proceeding with the upgrade. This should form part of the software updating process. For me this is a very sad moment. Please tell me I haven't lost these images forever!

Catalina will not run the iPhoto application but you can access your photo library using the Photos application in Catalina.

Regarding a backup, Apple does recommend backing up before upgrading and I would highly recommend having a current backup any time, not just when upgrading. Hardware can fail with no warning, software errors can cause data loss, computers can be stolen, lost in a fire. Not having a backup of photos in a year is risky.

iPhoto was discontinued more than 4 years ago. It is no longer developed or sold. It was replaced by the more powerful (and free) Photos.app that comes with the OS. You can migrate to that app very simply:

Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch Photos. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and point at your iPhoto Library. It will do the rest.

If you prefer not to use Photos there are several 3rd party apps that you can use. Which to choose depends on the kind of photographer you are and your budget.

Really, panic not. But also, it's no one's fault but your own if you don't back things up.

Have no fear. I completely accept that my not backing up my photos is my own fault. I don't really need that sort of comment. Just any assistance in finding out if it is possible to regain access. Thankfully I keep regular backups of everything else on my computer but for whatever reason, the last time I did this last month, I didn't do the photos. Stupid I know. But I am capable of beating myself up about that.

I have been advised by Apple Support to download their iPhoto Library Upgrader tool so I will give that a go.

Thanks everyone for helping.

Take care and have a good Easter.

Oh and don't forget to do regular back-ups of your computer files :)

Bye

I am delighted to report that with the help of Apple Support I managed to access the old iPhotos file, move all my photos to the Photos library and, you will be pleased to know, back them all up! Problem solved. Much relief here. Thanks again for all your help and suggestions. It's great to know that things are not necessarily hopeless in cases like these. Take care all. And stay safe in these surreal times.
