Keynote woes

Hi everyone.

I'm trying to open a keynote file sent by a colleague. They created the file on an old macbook running OS Sierra 10.13.6. My macbook is operating on the same system but Keynote will not open the file. Says I need to update to 10.14 or later to download the latest version of Keynote. It appears that is not possible for me to upgrade my OS beyond Sierra and so I cannot download the latest Keynote.

My question is why. Why would a file created on an old version of Keynote not be compatible with the same old version of Keynote?

And is there a way around this other than buying a new laptop??

Some older versions of Keynote had difficulties opening some Keynote files, but in general, any version of Keynote from the version that created the Keynote project file and newer should open the file. Also the Keynote file may be corrupt.

If you are OK with sending me the Keynote project file, I can try opening it on my system, and return it as a Keynote version 7 filetype which is compatible with Sierra. I regularly open clients files going back 15 years. You can send it using Dropbox, one drive or other file transfer service.
