Is there a way to keep a checklist from notes up on desktop/home screen like stickies are? I enjoy using stickies but I want to have a checklist format to help keep track of assignments for school, but I can't get notes to go as small as stickies are.

No there isn't. Of course you could leave Notes open and minimize its window to the Dock until you need to look at it to keep it out of the way.
