Quite a few people are reporting this same problem. You can try this. It worked for me, but I had to do it a couple of times to get it to work.

Launch Messages

Go to More all the way to the right in the app tray. Tap on Edit

Tap the red minus sign next to Images to remove it from Favorites

Turn Images off below - tap on the green button

Tap Done

Force close messages

Restart your device

Launch Messages

Tap on More in the app tray

Tap Edit

Turn #images on again

I can’t guarantee that will fix it, but you can give it a try.

As I stated, it took me a couple of tries today. The last time this happened to me a few days ago, it just started working again out of the blue.

I believe that it has something to do with the load on Apple’s servers. With the lockdown and shelter in home restrictions going on all over the world, all of Apples resources as well as internet connectivity have to be overloaded. People are trying to stay in touch with others using social media, and texting. Things are just going a little haywire right now.

I know that’s not a very technical explanation, but I think it makes some sense.
