Recently updated my Mac to Catalina. Just plugged in my Time Machine external drive to back up my Mac, and it's painfully slow. Was stuck on 'Freeing up Space' for ever. After a while I clicked Enter Time Machine, and now it's changed from being stuck on 'Freeing up Space' to stuck on 'Stopping...'.
Can anyone help / advise?

Thank you for this - yes I'd seen that, but all it really says that seems relevant to me, is "If you recently installed new software or upgraded macOS, it might take longer to complete the next backup."
Now my Mac is stuck on 'Stopping...' so I seem to be stuck in limbo
Btw, I have a G-Drive 2TB, formatted to Mac OS Extended (Journaled). This has my Time Machine Back up on it, as well as a back-up copy of another external drive that I use.
