iPhone4 Voice Control activates randomly when listening to audiobooks/music

Hello all,
I have a problem that is frustrating the **** out of me.
I listen to audio books and songs while working out at the gym or travelling in my car.
*Here is the problem:* *When listening to either an audio book or music, voice control pops up randomly. I cancel it then the track skips forward at a very fast rate.*
*Current Fix:* I then have to rewind back to where the Voice control kicked in. When I do that I am ok for a few mins, then the voice control kicks on again. Rebooting the Iphone staves off the issue for a few hours.
*I am using the Apple supplied headsets with the phone mike built in.*
Do I have a defective Iphone?
I see that a lot of 3GS uses have the same issue. See the following URL.
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2058366&start=0&tstart=0

This is so frustrating. If this is not solved soon, I will go back to my 3GS which has been extremely stable.
Pls help.

It is July 7/30/ 2010 and There have not been any fixes for this.

I have an iPhone 4 (previously had an Iphone 3gs and before that an Ipod 2nd gen) Over 3 Different devices and a multitude of headphones (both apple and non-apple) and I STILL get this problem 20-30 mins in. It seems the voice control "features" is not perfect. It assumes you're giving it a command when you're breathing heavy or something. But even then that makes no sense because then the song starts to skip like you pressed fastforward (which isn't even a command). I originally thought the case I was using was at fault. Then I thought well maybe its the headphones with mic...But I get the same problem with my headphones without mic as well.

It is EXTREMELY frustrating that you can not disable voice control. I've tried several times to do this. I can't even get a good cardio session in.

I'm sure voice control is useful for SOME users, and SOME users love it the way it is. But clearly its not useful for everyone.

Why is apple ignoring this issue?
Please release a patch giving users the option to DISABLE voice control COMPLETELY.

Thanks

I HAVE (kind of) A SOLUTION!

this isn't perfect, but it really helps.. a ton. I have bose mobile in ear headphones and sometimes, especially when working out, the music pauses, skips, voice control pops up, ruins my workout, i get ****** off, etc etc etc.

these headphones control the app that's open on the main screen- so if you open your music, turn the screen off, you can toggle skipping/pausing tracks with the button on the headphones.

here's the fix: open another app. get your music going, and make the main open application anything that doesn't have a control- for example your email. this really cuts down the amount the voice control cuts my music off. i've been toying with this for a little while now, and it seems to help a lot.

let me know if this works!

That's good for you but I think Apple should devise some software that enables users to turn off voice control if they don't want it. And this discussion topic seems to be going on for years...

Voice control is not something I really require, it's become a nuisance - now everyone has this sense of foreboding that whenever there's hot/humid weather or doing a gym workout the dreaded voice control will decide to activate itself without the user wanting it to.

SORT IT OUT APPLE! WE WANT THE CHOICE TO TURN OFF VOICE CONTROL!

I have encountered the same issue with an ipod touch and iphone 4. With both devices I did not use headphones with a microphone. Powering down the ipod touch and iphone completly seemed to help. It drove me mad and in the end i switched to an ipod nano whilst in the gym - drastic I know but I got thoroughly fed up wiith voice control switching on randomly and skipping tracks. .

I ended up getting an new iphone 4 and have never used it at the gym - however the other day the same voice control issue happened again. The only common theme is that the iphone 4 was in a case (same as when I used to use my previous iPhone 4 and iPod touch at the Gym) and I was using the headphones that I would use for my ipod nano when at the gym so I guess sweat could play a part.

Maybe Apple don't know the true cause of the problem or maybe it is a design fault that is too expensive to fix. Either way I agree with everyone and it should have had a feature to disable voice control !!

I've experienced the same problems with iPhone 4, iPod Touch, iPod Nano and a Shuffle. Voice Control problem obviously only occurs on the phone, but all devices experience problems. I am convinced it's in the mic portion of the earbuds. This makes sense, the problems are all related to the controls in the mic. I have modified the earbuds (added in ear silicone pieces) so I hate the change to other earbuds but I guess that's the answer. BTW, I never have problem running outside, or running inside. Problem for me is always on the stationary bike, where theres a much great sweat issue.

I have the same problem;however, I don't think it's sweat because my iPhone has never been in humidity if I'm at the gym its in my bag or i'm showering it's in a sparate room. All of a sudden i'm getting this problem. In addition to voice control coming on and songs fast forward. My phone freezes and sometimes when I'm texting I can open the keyboard but I can't type anything. Also it wont recognise my remote anymore. I made appointment @ the apple store make them fix it. I done everything I can do.

I have the same problem with my 3gs however it is NOT sweat related, I use my iPhone in the car and using speakers in the kitchen and the sitting room using the headphone jack. A small movement triggers voice contorl and makes the music skip behave erraticly. Sometimes the music continues through the phone speakers after I've removed the headphone jack. I'm having to resort to CD's :-(

And another point this happens regardless of the headphone cable I'm using (I have four different ones)

So I swapped out my iPhone earbuds with the inline microphone for older earbuds without the controls. No problem with voice control or erratic behavior. Can't speak for anyone else's issues, but I've never liked those things anyway. I have silicone fittings on those earbuds with the inline mic, I have to use those earbuds when out running because they're the only kind that work with my Shuffle. Problem is swapping out the silicone fittings to other earbuds isn't going to be a good long term solution.

This just started happening to me two days ago. I have the Iphone 4. It is not sweat, humidity or exercise related. It happens at night when I go to bed. I lie in bed and listen to audio books on my iphone. I am wearing the Apple supplied earbuds with the mic. I've had this for phone for a year now, and I do this everynight. Just started happening. I live in AZ, so there is NO humidity. I'm just lying in bed, so no sweat or exercise. Drives me crazy! I end up just turning the whole thing off. I miss my audiobooks! I was so hoping to find a resolution to this problem. Looks like I have to go to the Apple store.

I have the 4s OS 5.1 and I'm having the same voice control issue. I've swapped out my earbuds for the old school version without a mic. Still happens 30 min into my run. I'm a female and feel I need the added security of a phone when I'm running, but this issue prevents me from that. I've gone back to my iPod -with the wheel - and it works just fine.

Apple support was zero help - as were the techs at the Apple store. They looked at me like I was an idiot.

So, basically, I can't offer you any quick fixes, but wanted you to know you aren't alone. Good luck.

Did everyone in this thread read the posting of Ogram321?

Did anyone try going into the Apple Store and see what they say?

I have printed the page and am taking it with me to my local Apple Store

and see what they say.

My new 4S has the same problem, but this is happening in my 72 degree office while

using the headset that came with the phone.
