iPhone4 Voice Control activates randomly when listening to audiobooks/music

Hello all,
I have a problem that is frustrating the **** out of me.
I listen to audio books and songs while working out at the gym or travelling in my car.
*Here is the problem:* *When listening to either an audio book or music, voice control pops up randomly. I cancel it then the track skips forward at a very fast rate.*
*Current Fix:* I then have to rewind back to where the Voice control kicked in. When I do that I am ok for a few mins, then the voice control kicks on again. Rebooting the Iphone staves off the issue for a few hours.
*I am using the Apple supplied headsets with the phone mike built in.*
Do I have a defective Iphone?
I see that a lot of 3GS uses have the same issue. See the following URL.
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2058366&start=0&tstart=0

This is so frustrating. If this is not solved soon, I will go back to my 3GS which has been extremely stable.
Pls help.

It is July 7/30/ 2010 and There have not been any fixes for this.

I have an iPhone 4 (previously had an Iphone 3gs and before that an Ipod 2nd gen) Over 3 Different devices and a multitude of headphones (both apple and non-apple) and I STILL get this problem 20-30 mins in. It seems the voice control "features" is not perfect. It assumes you're giving it a command when you're breathing heavy or something. But even then that makes no sense because then the song starts to skip like you pressed fastforward (which isn't even a command). I originally thought the case I was using was at fault. Then I thought well maybe its the headphones with mic...But I get the same problem with my headphones without mic as well.

It is EXTREMELY frustrating that you can not disable voice control. I've tried several times to do this. I can't even get a good cardio session in.

I'm sure voice control is useful for SOME users, and SOME users love it the way it is. But clearly its not useful for everyone.

Why is apple ignoring this issue?
Please release a patch giving users the option to DISABLE voice control COMPLETELY.

Thanks

Had this problem on and off for the past week, but unusably terrible this morning. Read through this thread, sat down with a kleenex, twisted the corners up and twirled them around in the headphone jack on the phone itself. Dust and lint came out, and now it works again!

So make sure to clean inside the jack even if you're not using headphones - you may have some gunk in there.

iPhone 6 owner here, and I have this problem.

So this problem is apparently 5 years old (or maybe more than that) and Apple still hasn't solved it? Wow, gotta hand it to Apple for blatantly ignoring the problem/pretending that it doesn't exist! This stupid Voice Control bug is forcing me to replace my JLab earphones, which work perfectly with every device I own except my iPhone 6... and my iPhone 6 works with all of the other head/earphones I own except my JLabs... what a messed up situation. I'm not going to factory reset my iPhone just because of this. Not yet, at least.

I'm terribly disappointed in Apple and I won't be buying another iPhone after the 6. iOS should let us disable Voice Control. As of iOS 8.4, even if you enable and uncheck Siri, Voice Control comes up by default when you listen to music/videos.

I just switched from iPhone 6 plus to the iPhone SE. Specifically because the SE is small enough to take while working out. I have Bang & Olufsen headphones. While using these headphones with the iPhone SE and listening to music at the Gym the voice control started acting up. It came on seemingly activated by ambient noise. Repeatedly. Incessantly. Randomly.

I managed to find the settings to disable it. Which was not easy (well hidden, I cannot find it again). In any case it is OFF. Yet the voice control screen kept interrupting cutting off/ scrambling the music and popping up on the screen every 2 seconds. I rebooted (switched off and on) several times. The problem persisted.

I went to the apple store on Grand Central Station in NY. After verifying that the voice control was indeed off I was told that it was an issue with my headphones. This is the standard answer I get from apple when one of their products malfunctions when interacting with any non-apple devise.

Frustrating and infuriating to say the least. Their products are not cheap. The least they could do is hear you out and try to solve the issue when they malfunction.

Just as randomly, the issue is now gone. If it repeats I will return the product and get a different brand.

Your post is a bit confusing. On an SE, Voice Control is only activated if you have Siri turned off. There is no setting to turn Voice Control off.

Voice control caused me to spend $33.00! Suddenly made my iPhone inoperable. Tried restoring as a new phone but could not get rid of it after shutting down twice. Had to pay the iPhone repair person who said someone changed my setting which would have been impossible. Apple should fix this!!!!!

Or, next time you don't understand something on your phone and reading the manual doesn't help, make an appointment at the Genius Bar at your local Apple Store. They will not charge you anything for helping you understand the settings on your phone.

Apole cannot "fix" someone changing the settings on your phone. Put a passcode on your phone to prevent other people from making changes and, either learn about the settings on your phone or don't change things without asking someone one who does.

Hello, What I'm saying is the phone suddenly became inoperable because of voice control which I never set myself. I am saying the phone had been with me the whole time and never was accessed by anyone other than myself. I had passcode on, fyi.

But thanks for the tip on making an appointment at the Genius Bar. It was not possible at the time for me due to time constraints.

If the phone was not accessible to anyone but you, you must have inadvertently changed a setting. The only way to turn Voice Control (which is not the same thing as VoiceOver, by the way) on, is to turn off Siri in Settings>General>Siri.

If you turned of VoiceOver, you may well have done it by triple tapping the Home button. The easiest way to turn off VoiceOver, is to press and hold the Home button to invoke Siri and say, "Turn off VoiceOver".
