Podcasts not updating on watch

So it seems this podcast issue on Apple Watch is still not fixed.

I have about 10 different podcasts I listen to regularly. They work perfectly from my phone - both streaming and downloaded. When I try and sync these to my watch it sticks on "updating". So I can't download podcasts to my watch to listen to when I am not tethered or on wifi - which means if I go for a run, I have to carry my phone. Music syncs perfectly to the watch - just not podcasts.

I have tried everything. Deleting the podcast app, reinstalling. Deleting and then re-pairing the watch to my phone. Checking I subscribe to podcasts. Making sure both phone and watch are charging. Using bluetooth / wifi / combination of both. Trying both "custom" and "listen now". All software is updgraded to the latest version.

I have tried overcast but the same issue appears - podcasts sync maybe 1 in 5 times but it's very patchy.

Help. I'm going nuts here. Am I missing something obvious?

I have struggled for months with the same Podcast to Watch sync issues that everyone else here seems to have. I love Apple since I bought Quadro something or other but as of the last 12 months or so, I'd say the user interfaces and user experience of Apple's iOS apps have become complete garbage.

Bottom line on THIS particular issue IMHO:

The Podcast app for sync to Watch is completely useless (why Bluetooth? That's a completely brain dead way to transfer media when wifi is present almost everywhere). TBH, the Podcast app interface basically ***** to begin with. Littered with confusing icons and a counterintuitive workflow.

Overcast might be the BEST podcast app for playback on the iPhone. Clean and user friendly. But I can't sort out how to sync to Watch over anything but Bluetooth (maybe it can't) so I ditched if for syncing podcasts to the Watch

Now be careful. The next bit is about the unfortunately similarly named Outcast:

Outcast syncs over WiFi. Praise Allah. But it quit working maybe 60 days ago and I bailed back to the Podcast app. After a few weeks of that useless and frustrating garbage, I couldn't take it anymore. As of today, I'm back to Outcast on the Watch. New interface, wifi-fast downloads and 100% satisfaction.

So:

  1. Overcast for podcast playback on the Phone
  2. Outcast for offline podcast playback on the Watch
  3. Apple Podcast app - nvmd!

And as soon as Spotify releases an offline playback version for the Watch, I'm back to that and dropping Apple Music like a bag of hammers. Because Apple Music might be the biggest UI/UX catastrophe I've ever experienced.

Sorry Apple. You need to get your head back into the software game. Your hardware's mostly great; your iOS software is a disaster.

I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one with this problem. I have an AW6 and when I first set it up, it was downloading and syncing podcasts correctly but then got bogged down and just stopped syncing. I reset the watch back to factory settings and it was syncing happily for a few days and then just stopped. Don't really want to go to a third party solution as Apple should make this just work.

Oh well, looks like I'm listening to music on my walks instead...

Believe me, I Have tried everything. Thought I had it fixed a few time’s. The most previous fix lasted almost a week. Unfortunately, I was not able to get Saturday’s and today’s podcast. I spoke to a senior advisor with Apple and she could not resolve. I told the advisor about this discussion thread and her response was “you can’t believe everything you read on the internet” 😡

I ended up installing outcast, and it works perfect. My issue is, apple’s podcast should work perfect too !!

I have been dealing with this, and the setting up a password issue, for a couple weeks.... just about done !!

I bought an Apple Watch 6 last month and am having the exact same problem. The most annoying thing is that it worked okay the first couple times but now it isn’t syncing properly. Even when my watch and phone are sitting charging next to each other for 8 hours.

I kinda wish Apple would focus more on getting the basic functionality right before adding bells and whistles that look cool in an ad but 99% of people don’t care about. The old Apple aphorism was that “It just works”, but I’m seeing many examples of that no longer being the case.

I really never downloaded the podcast, my watch has cellular so I would stream them. However, I could not even get the episodes that way. I switched to outcast because the podcast are always available. I started downloading them to save a little battery life. Simultaneously streaming and gps seems to eat the battery up (especially on my Apple Watch 5) I returned the 5 for a 6 and have had no battery issues.

Can I just turn off my iPhone 12pro?

Be aware that even a cellular Apple Watch still depends on the iPhone for some services. See the footnotes from the following URL:

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT205547

1. To receive SMS, MMS, or push notifications from third-party apps on your cellular Apple Watch, your paired iPhone must be powered on and connected to Wi-Fi or cellular, but it doesn't need to be nearby. You also need to be signed in to iMessage on your iPhone.

I finally decided to cancel my cellular service on this useless watch. I've donated over $100 to Verizon in monthly payments in exchange for nothing because apparently "Apple Watch S5 with Cellular" means you can stream 10 seconds of a song/podcast at a time before it stops streaming. Very useful service!

The most frustrating part of this entire experience was how the people at Apple were completely useless. I also pay for Apple Care for some reason beyond my understanding. I had two "Senior Advisors" (Mike and Chris) who both pretended to try to help me over the course of 6 months. Both assured me that they would not rest until my issue was solved. Unfortunately I think both must have passed away because each abruptly and inexplicably cut off all communication with me and no other Apple employees ever responded to my several follow-ups.

RIP Mike and Chris.
