Cannot output to HDMI monitor

I have a new 2020 MBA running 10.15.4. I have a new Apple USB-C multiport adapter. I cannot get the HDMI output to work for more than 10 seconds. The display works fine, either mirror or extended, and then the monitor shifts to large color bars.

I have swapped out the HDMI cable and verified that the monitor works using my ThinkPad. I have also tried 2 other adapters and always get the same result.

Any advice?

Here is the resolution that worked for me. I spoke with Apple Support. When I shared my screen with them, they could see both monitors working while I could only see the built-in display and the external had the color bars. Since he could see the display, we toggled through all of the available resolution options, he guided me until I was over the "confirm" button, and then disconnected/reconnected. When I selected 1080i, and reconnected, the display stayed on. Its odd because this is an old TV and doesn't support 1080.

Also, I was able to replicate the issue using another monitor. The only different was that the laptop recognized it but it never showed any content.
