Freeze frame option greyed out on right click menu in timeline

Previous answers unhelpful. I see a youtube video showing how to add a freeze frame by right clicking on the timeline and selecting freeze frame from a dropdown. On my version this is greyed out. No decent answer provided. Someone said "you can't find it because it is already there". What the **** is that supposed to mean? Someone suggested selecting 'modify' but unhelpfully did not explain where "modify" is. If anyone is answering please provide a clear full answer - otherwise assistance is just more frustrating.

Much obliged

Video editing software can indeed be frustrating at times.

The grayed out freeze frame issue could be a glitch in your iMovie app. You didn't mention what version of iMovie 10 you are using. However, whatever version you are suing redownloading iMovie should be harmless. Use your own discretion, but if you want to try it, use this procedure: Drag your iMovie 10 app from the Applications folder into the trash, but do not empty the trash. (You can skip that step if you had iMovie 10 on your computer before, but deleted it.) Sign in to the app store and open your purchases folder by clicking on your name at the bottom of the app store side bar. You will see your purchases displayed, including iMovie 10. Redownload/update iMovie from there. If not successful, drag your present iMovie app out of the trash (if you moved it there) and return it to the Applications folder. However, the download should be successful and leave you with the latest version of iMovie 10 that your Mojave operating system can run. See if you get a non-grayed out freeze frame option. If no luck, no harm done.

Rather than the Freeze Frame feature, you can try placing your playhead at the frame you want to freeze and then do a share to image (not share to file). You will get a still image of the frame on your desktop. Drag it in to iMovie and insert it where you want to get the effect that you want. It will be the exact size of the frame that you exported.

Is it possible that you are control clicking on a still image in the timeline rather than a video? If so, that will show a grayed out "Add Freeze Frame" option in the drop down menu. Also, if you are clicking on a video clip located in the upper timeline rather than the main timeline the control-click drop down menu will show Add Freeze Frame grayed out, but if you click on the "Modify" menu item in the menu bar at the top of the screen you can get the Add Freeze frame option.

I can't think of any other reasons why there would be a gray out unless there is a corrupt preference causing iMovie to function improperly. Try opening iMovie while holding down the Option and Command keys and selecting to delete preferences in the box that appears. iMovie will open in a new library. Reopen your old library to get back to your projects. Now see if you can get an Add Freeze Frame option.

If none of the above describes your situation, please describe what steps you are taking to add the freeze frame and what happens when you try?

As an aside, when you post with a lot of attitude it makes people not want to try to help you.

Fair comment. A little frustration showing through but sometimes guidance could be a bit clearer. I have tried all these options with Apple Tech support in a screen share and all to no avail. I have been clicking on main timeline and trying both the right click and the Modify options. Freeze frame always greyed out. Same with movie clips, still photos and screen captures. We decided it was some glitch with my version [at least] of Mojave. I will not upgrade to Catalina because it will be the second time I'll have to purchase new versions of Word and Excel. Since I use it mostly to have a still start or finish to a Ken Burns effect, I use a cumbersome workaround just inserting a second version of the photo cropped to suit. Fiddly but it works. I could try uninstalling and reinstalling iMovie but have done that before with another problem and I had difficulties reloading movies.

Thanks for your attempt to help.

You said in a previous post that you had reloaded iMovie from the app store as I had suggested. So you don't need to do it again. Even reloading the same version can clear out glitches.

If you put your iMovie app in the trash, but don't empty it, then when you go to the app store in your purchases folder you should see iMovie in there among your purchases, with a download or update option. You shouldn't be getting an "Open" option. The procedure is to drag the iMovie app from the applications folder, not the dock.

Per your earlier post, you can export as an image by clicking on the Image icon in the selection box that appears when you click on the upload box (the one with the up pointing arrow) in the upper right of the screen.

Absolutely right, you are lucky that Rich replied at all.

You have the cheek to say this.

"If anyone is answering please provide a clear full answer"

What about giving a clear question.?

You don't even say what OS you are using or what version of iMovie you are using. What do you expect?

Yes very FRUSTRATING when you can't even be bothered to give essential details. Mind readers? No.

Hard to hear, but somebody had to say it.

OK OK, don't get so upset. I admit I was frustrated but I don't think I have a cheek to ask for clear answers. There are often assumptions that enquirers know more than they do and it is very difficult to use an answer if it is insufficiently detailed. My issue is with iMovie 10.14 and I am running Mojave 10.14.6 I think the issue is a program glitch. As before, I will not upgrade to Catalina because my Word and Excel programs will not work. I very much appreciate people attempts to help and would like people to assume I am a 'dummy' so that I can follow suggestions click by click.

I have reloaded iMovie as suggested via the App store but I rather suspect it simply re-loaded the same version rather than upgrading so it has made no difference. I had issues when I first upgraded to Mojave I recall. Some photos would not show properly in the available media and it needed some long winded workaround. Maybe Mojave and iMovie are not good companions. Your option of 'share to image' , as an alternative, [which I cannot see as any drop down option but I assume you mean somehow taking screen shot] could work but I think sizing issues and possibly a degradation of image may prevent the new still frame blending in to the end of the previous shot as desired. I'm going back to just inserting a duplicate of the image I want to freeze and fiddling with the frame size to match. It would be nice if it were possible to use right, left /up, down keys to finely adjust the cropping frame - does not seem possible but I am managing more or less seamless cuts so just fiddly.

Thanks again for your help.

Rich,

Update: Phew! As above, I have gone to Appstore and clicked 'open' next to iMovie. - The only option available. That opens iMovie and my current project. However, if I close that and then try to find iMovie on my machine it is no longer there. I clicked on it whilst it was still in the dock and it said cannot open because it is in trash. Obviously I can return it from trash but back to square 1. How do I actually install a new version from Appstore rather than simply 'opening' it from some memory - maybe on the cloud?
