No audio connecting MacBook Pro to TV using HDMI

I have a mid-2014 MacBook Pro, which I have connected to an HDMI input on my Samsung TV through a Thunderbolt-HDMI adapter, and HDMI cable, and have selected that HMDI input on the TV. In System Preferences - Sound, I have both the Output and Sound Effects tabs set to the HDMI [Samsung] option. In Applications - Utilities - Audio MIDI Setup, I have selected HDMI. I have tried restarting both the MacBook and the TV. The video is there but it does not play any audio.

I have tried every suggestion listed there without success. Given the age of the post and suggested solutions, I thought it made sense to start a new thread. Short of downloading third-party software, no solution that appears to have worked for others in that earlier post works for me.

Hi duneclimb,

I see that you're attempting to send audio from your Mac to a TV using a Thunderbolt to HDMI adapter, but that it's not working.

If your Mac is able to see your TV an an audio output option, the best place to configure it would be in System Preferences > Sound > Output. If your TV isn't listed here, it's likely that your adapter is not capable of passing the audio through (in which case, you may need a different adapter).

In this situation, I'd suggest doing some isolation steps; try these items with another Mac to see if the behavior is specific to your Mac. If you determine that another Mac has the same outcome, you'll need to test a different adapter, HDMI cable, and TV with your Mac to see if changing any of these items out provides a better result.

I configured it as you describe, and my TV is listed there, but I am still not getting any sound.
