An iPad is not a cellular telephone. It has no capability to send or receive SMS text messages.

Perhaps you have an iPhone. If so, you may use Handoff to communicate SMS messages between the iPhone and iPad.

2 questions:

1. Are you using the same Apple ID for the 2 devices?
2. On iPhone in Settings > Messages > Text Message Forwarding > is your iPad selected?

Both cases should be a yes.

• You were sending/receiving iMessages; or
• You were using Handoff to do this through an iPhone.

In either case, the old iPad’s current status is completely irrelevant.
