What model Mac? To find the complete model information select About This Mac from the Apple menu. You can create a snapshot of the dialog as follows:

This is what comes up from the start up menu. Read a few things online, says inside the download from apple, there is an installer which is needed to install the actual OS but I can’t find a way to open the usb to access the info inside it.
If you have a bootable USB installer with El Capitan on it
Restart your mac while pressing and holding the option/ alt key
after a couple of minutes you should see the start up manager.
You should see icons of the bootable drives attached to your mac
select the USB (orange), press Return. The mac will Restart
and boot to the USB, when it does you should see a Utilities panel
like above, click on Install OS X, press Continue.
Make sure it says Install OS X and not Reinstall OS X,
if it says Reinstall OS X then the mac has booted up to your
Recovery drive, which is a problem.
If there bootable USB has been created correctly and you have pressed and held the option/ alt key when restarting your Mac, it will boot to the USB and open with a Utilities panel similar to the one you get when booting to Recover Mode.
One difference should be that it says Install OS X and not Reinstall OS X.
Do you see that.
It’s an 09. I can’t access anything. I’m asking from my iPhone.
I followed your instructions and it did not work. Any other ideas?
I also tried your suggestion and when I pressed option alt it took me to the utility menu same as picture above. I’m at a loss... any other ideas?
