Cheap action cam works as Webcam on Toshiba laptop but not on Macs?

My iMac webcam is very poor so I decided to use a cheap Chinese 4K action cam as a webcam.

I tried connecting it to both my iMac and Mac mini via its USB cable and selecting "PC Camera".

No way could I get it to work.

After several hours, in desperation, I thought I would give it a go on my old Toshiba laptop.

Incredibly the laptop recognised it immediately.

So what am I doing wrong or is it just that it is incompatible with Macs?
