change icons of folders

I know HOW to change it and I have done it before, but I am now having trouble getting it to show properly.

In the "Get Info" popup, when I try to paste the new png or jpeg image onto the old folder icon it only shows the DEFAULT file type icon for png and jpeg. The actual image does not appear. I've tried to repeat the process on folders that I have previously changed successfully only to have them now show the default icon.

Have you just upgraded form an older version of Mac OS X or macOS to macOS Catalina.

Sometime ago the easy method of copying and pasting from one folder info window to another disappeared.

Try opening the jpeg or png you want to use for the folder in Preview. click on Edit > Select All,

then press Edit> Copy. On the folder you want to change, press Command-i so the info panel opens up.

Highlight the small icon top left of the panel and press Command-v to paste the image from Preview to

the folder.

If that doesn't work then I don't know, I gave up on Catalina because of its many frustrating restrictions.

Are the folder icons you want to change folders created by you or are they System folders.

Catalina is very buttoned down and anything that is owned by the System cannot be changed.
