We haven’t used our Apple TV in a few years and would like to start using it but have lost the remote what can I do?

Depending on the model of Apple TV will be your options:
If you have a 3rd generation or earlier Apple TV, you can borrow one to set up the Remote App on an iPhone iPad or iPod touch or use a programmable / Universal remote: Use other remotes to control Apple TV - Apple Support
you'll need to borrow an original remote to set this up too.
If the Apple TV is an Apple TV HD (4th gen) or 4K (5th gen) you don't need the original remote, and can set up the App or widget on an iOS device directly.
