Using iPad as a Picture Frame

I am trying to use a 2013 IPad Air (iOS 12.4.5) as a continuous picture frame using Apple's Photos. The iPad is set to never lock. I select an album, start a slideshow with the repeat option turned on. The slideshow runs all the way through the album (and perhaps repeats once) but then Photos quits and the screen reverts to the home screen. In prior versions of the system there was a "Picture Frame" feature that could be selected on the home screen. iOS 12.4.5 does not have this feature and I assume the "repeat" option is intended to serve the same function. Does anyone have an idea as to why Photos quits and reverts to the home screen rather than continuing in a repeating loop? Thanks, Ed.
