Upgrade to iTunes for Windows 12.10.6.2 crashes PC with a blue screen (BSOD)

I'm using Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit and a recent upgrade of iTunes for Windows to version 12.10.6.2 started crashing my PC with a blue screen of death (BSOD) immediately after I connect my iPhone 6 or iPad Air 2 to the computer's USB 3.0 ports. These USB 3.0 ports are provided by an add-on card in my PC and not the motherboard. However, connecting my iPhone/iPad to any USB 2.0 port on the same add-on card or on the motherboard does not cause the crash. It only occurs on the USB 3.0 ports. I'm not sure if this would also happen on a USB 3.0 port on the motherboard, since I don't have any. The add-on card and USB 3.0 ports otherwise work without issues (if I connect USB flash drives, external hard drives, etc.).

The module that crashes is the Windows Driver Framework (wdf01000.sys).

If I uninstall iTunes 12.10.6.2 and go back to iTunes 12.10.3.1 then the crashes stop.

I managed to narrow it down to the actual culprit: Apple Mobile Device Support 13.5.0.26

iTunes for Windows setup file (iTunes64Setup.exe) is a bundle of several *.msi installation files:

AppleApplicationSupport.msi

AppleApplicationSupport64.msi

AppleMobileDeviceSupport64.msi

AppleSoftwareUpdate.msi

Bonjour64.msi

iTunes64.msi

SetupAdmin.exe

All these are installed / updated when you run iTunes64Setup.exe. You can unpack the "iTunes64Setup.exe" setup file (with 7-Zip for example) to get to the above mentioned installation files. The "AppleMobileDeviceSupport64.msi" seems to be the one that causes the blue screen crashes on my system. So I uninstalled it and then reinstalled the version 13.0.0.38 from the previous version of iTunes for Windows 12.10.3.1. For easier uninstallation of "Apple Mobile Device Support 13.5.0.26" I had to first uninstall "Apple Application Support (32-bit)" and "Apple Application Support (64-bit)" and then re-installed them back before installing Apple Mobile Device Support 13.0.0.38.

This solved the crashing / BSOD problems. Hopefully Apple will fix this in the future!

I just updated to 12.10.6.2 and have the exact same issue. I did not try it with my iPad2 yet, but my iPhone 6 definitely caused the BSOD twice. I did not think about the usb3.0 issue until i saw this post, but when I tried a different USB port (2.0) it worked fine. The first USB port I used is a motherboard based port, not an expansion card. OTOH, it would be an early USB3.0 implementation since this is not a new motherboard.

This is the first BSOD I've seen in years. Maybe even the first ever I've seen on Windows 7, and I've been using windows 7 64-pro since immediately after it was released. Certainly within a month or two.
