iTunes audio not working

Hi all. The audio from my iTunes app on my Mac is no longer working for some unknown reason (this goes for music as well as movies). The files themselves are fine - I can play them in Quicktime and other apps with no problem. The volume slider in iTunes is up and the computer is selected for output. In my system settings in the sound section, the headphone port is selected for output and the volume is up. No audio is present through my speakers or through my headphones.


I'm on Sierra 10.12.6 and iTunes 12.8.2.3.

I understand you're not getting any sound when playing music or movies in iTunes on your Mac. I'd like to see if I can help you get this resolved.


Try out these steps and test iTunes after each one.


  1. Disconnect your headphones from your Mac.
  2. Close iTunes and reopen it.
  3. Restart your Mac.
  4. Reset the NVRAM: Reset NVRAM or PRAM on your Mac.
  5. Log into a new user account: Set up users, guests, and groups.
  6. Boot into safe mode: How to use safe mode on your Mac.


Respond back if the issue continues. Let me know what happens when you tested iTunes while in safe mode and while in a new user account.

It is certainly unexpected for those two steps to cause your Mac to no longer start up at all. An NVRAM reset and safe mode boot are both pretty basic nondestructive troubleshooting steps that are used for a wide variety macOS issues. Since your Mac is reacting in the way it did, this may indicate there was an underlying issue happening that was brought out when you tried the troubleshooting steps.


What exactly is happening when you start your Mac? Do you see anything on the screen or get any error messages? These two support articles may be helpful:
