Macbook update Catalina stuck

Hi, I am trying to update my MacBook Pro (mid 2012) from OS X Yosemite(10.10.5) to Catalina. The software was downloaded and installed. I had around 40 GB of free space. Shortly after I started the update, I got a black screen. However, the MacBook is still on and when I click on the trackpad the spinning globe appears and the screen lightens up a bit. This has been going on now for 24 hours. Do I just have to wait (as it is an old MacBook) or is there something else I can do? Thanks!

Force your Mac to shut down by pressing and holding its power button for about six seconds. Then, power it up again in the usual manner. It will either finish the installation, or it won't. If it does not start, then read If your Mac doesn't start up all the way - Apple Support.
