You mentioned you just opened your Mac. Be sure to remove all packing material from the Mac, including any clear screen protectors. This is meant to be removed, and may cover the camera and cause issues with photo quality. Another step that can resolve a variety of issues is a simple restart. I got my new MacBook Air 2020 yesterday and the camera is TERRIBLE. I still have my MacBook Pro from 2015 and the camera is so much better in my old one. Everything is removed from my screen so that's not the issue. This quality is so cheaply done. I can't even trade it in for a better camera on a different computer because they're all the same camera. I called apple support thinking something had to be wrong with it and they said it's due to them rushing the camera during COVID-19. I hope this is something they go back and fix. It's awful.

I feel the same way. I returned mine. I'll go and shop in store next time and LOOK at the camera quality. This was so awful. The support team knew it too. They were all telling me that's "just how it is". You're telling me I have to sit somewhere near a window to use the camera? No thanks.
