Help.... Radio App still won’t play in Background since IOS 13 update

Ever since I updated my iPhone X to iOS 13, my favourite radio app (Talkradio) will not work reliably.

Despite applying all the iOS updates, it still won’t work how it used to. I’ve tried deleting the app and reinstalling it and all the advice that I can find online in hope that I can keep my favourite radio app working.

It’s further complicated by the fact that the radio app offers a live stream of the current broadcast which DOES work.

If I want to listen to an older broadcast however, when I select (for example one of last weeks shows) it will play providing that

1/ I don’t let my iPhone (Or iPad) go to sleep / lock screen or

2/ switch to another app (eg. A game / email etc.).

In the latter case, the Talkradio app will play in the background for a minute or two but then stops. If I want to continue listening to it, I have to go back to the app and press the play button again whereupon it will resume.

.... then what ?

All the above Repeats, I t’s like Groundhog day and it’s driving me nuts because I can’t catch up / listen to these older shows (archived, a bit like a podcast) like I used to be able to. Why not ?

This all happened when I first upgraded to iOS 13. It’s been massively Frustrating and disappointing to not be able to make any progress since the updates were applied / installed.

It’s complicated even further I fear, I have friends with iPhones with the same version of iOS installed, and they CAN listen to the same app / scheduled programmes without issue.

these problems apply to any iPhone or iPad that I login to with my Apple ID, so it suggests that it’s not the app, but maybe to do with my Apple profile settings.

it’s got to the point where I’m even thinking of buying a different platform of mobile device, just because I miss being able to listen to my favourite radio show.

Has anybody else experienced this problem and can anybody help me to resolve it before I throw in the towel and move away from Apple?

Thanks in desperation.

Hello shaunglobal,

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities! I see you're having an issue listening to rebroadcast episodes with a third-party radio app, and I'd like to do what I can to help out.

To clarify that I'm understanding correctly, this is a third-party app just for this talk radio station, correct? Or are you using the Apple Music app to listen to the talk radio station? Listen to Beats 1 and Radio in the Music app

For either type of app, are you using Wi-Fi or cellular data? Test with both types internet connections to see if the issue occurs for just one type of connection.

There are no settings within your Apple ID which would affect how an app performs. However, if this is a third-party app, there may be some behaviors from your settings for the app itself.

For the third-party app, verify that the app is up to date: Update apps or use automatic downloads

I'd recommend contacting the app developer to let them know what's happening. How to contact an app developer Or look for a support page, which can help provide answers.

If you're using the Apple Music app, try listening to a different station to test if the same issue happens.

Take care!
