Transfer my current SIM card from my old iPhone to my new iPhone

Since everything is stored on my old iPhone such as; contacts, pictures, messages, apps etc;

Do I have to turn off my old iPhone before transferring my current SIM card to my new iPhone?
Then do I turn on my old iPhone again and turn on my new iPhone to transfer everything over?

Hello,

A SIM card only links your phone number to cell towers, it doesn’t actually store any of the data on the device.

So there is no need to turn off my old iPhone, just take the SIM card out of my old iPhone and transfer it to my new iPhone?
