Transferring icloud photos from ipad Air 2 to Windows 10

I am trying to transfer icloud photos to a Windows 10 PC, where I have the iCloud app with photos.

I have checked the boxes for 'iCloud drive' and 'Photos', pressed 'Done' and then pressed 'Apply', but 'Apply' is greyed out. I can't see anything showing that photos are being transferred.

Through searching on my PC Pictures folder I found that there is an iCloud Photos folder with empty subfolders for 'Downloads', 'Shared' and 'Uploads'.

I understand that transferring photos via iCloud may take several hours (I have around 6000) but I

am wondering if it is normal for the 'Apply' button on the app to be greyed out, and whether all this is

a sign that things aren't working as they should be.

What should I do?

Windows, Windows 10

Only new photos taken after you have set up iCloud Photos for Windows will automatically transfer.

For photos taken before that see the following from Set up and use iCloud Photos on your Windows PC - Apple Support

Download your photos and videos from iCloud Photos

New photos and videos you add to iCloud Photos will automatically download to your PC. You can also download your collection by year when you follow these steps:

  1. Open a File Explorer window.
  2. Under Favorites, click iCloud Photos.
  3. Click Download photos and videos.
  4. Choose the photos and videos you want to download and click Download.

Your photos and videos download to the location you set in iCloud Photos Options.
