How do I get my iPad gmail account to do email by current date first?

My iPad gmail account starts in Oct 2019 and goes back. How do I get my current emails back?

All the google solutions to choose "days to sync" are from years ago and don't apply. They say to go to mail>passwords & accounts, which are all separate now and don't solve my problem. Are you using the Mail app on the iPad, or are you using the Gmail app? Mail should sort by date, with the newest first. Check Settings>Mail, and check.
