I bought a new phone online and I’m sure I clicked the trade in option, and now I have the new phone but I am unsure how to trade in my old phone as there was nothing in the delivery box for the trade in.

Generally trade-in information and packaging comes separate from the new device. Check your invoice that was mailed to you and you will see if there was a trade-in expected. The invoice should show a credit if you were supposed to trade-in.
Contact Apple Support. They have a partner who handles the trade-in and they send you a box with instructions, usually after you've received your new phone.
I have discarded the shipping box and the invoice. Can I get a copy of the invoice from another source?
You should have also gotten an email of the order to your Apple ID email address. If you cannot locate that, they you will have to contact Apple directly.
