My MacBook Air keeps freezing/lagging out every 5 seconds while using the touchpad. PLEASE HELP!!

Over the last 5 hours, using the touchpad on my MacBook Air has become nearly impossible, with my laptop lagging out every 5 seconds or so. I thought the issue could be resolved by downloading Catalina, but I can't even download it from the App Store after following the guide. I deleted all existing cache in their folder, and made a backup through time machine to an external hard drive, and trying to increase the touch pad's speed, but none of those options worked. My MacBook Air still has about 95GB left of the total 256 so storage shouldn't be an issue, but I don't know if this is an issue with Mojave (which I'm currently stuck with), the high demand for Catalina, or busy servers or something else just pertaining to my laptop. I really need help resolving this issue asap, especially with the closing of the semester. So please, I ask if you can offer any solutions to share them. I'll try a do a scan to cleanup any potential viruses.

MacBook Air 13", macOS 10.14

To trouble shoot further you can:

—Try a SafeBoot https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201262

Takes noticeable longer to get to the login screen, does a 5-15 minute disk repair before it fully boots up, and certain system caches get cleared and rebuilt, including dynamic loader cache, etc. Login and test. Reboot and test as caches get rebuilt.

In Safe mode third party system modifications and system accelerations are disabled, it removes malware, etc hampering smooth operation, however a reboot will put it back to normal mode.

This test will tell you if third party interference; extensions etc are not loaded in safe boot mode.

— Test issue in another user (or guest user) account  https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204443

This will tell you if it a universal issue or isolated to your user/admin account.

If no resolve to get a good look at your System config. for conflicts or issues, you can download/run this trusted utility https://etrecheck.com

If you need help interpreting the report you can post it here in its entirety in the "Additional Text" box in the editing toolbar below, in your reply.

You can set its preference to "Allow full Disk Access", with this you get a digest of issues from the last 7 days that are saved in your system. _No_ personal information is revealed.

Just wanted to double-check what results should I type? Also, using a USB Mouse temporarily helps in place of the trackpad, but the keyboard is almost unbearably slow. I've read a few reviews, is this an issue with my battery? Albeit, there have been multiple nights I left my Macbook on overnight only in sleep mode, as opposed to completely shutting down.

Okay, so none of that worked. The Trackpad no longer works at all, keyboard’s been a bit better, but still something to be desired. I’m probably gonna need to uninstall Catalina, AND get the battery replaced. But I can’t risk uninstalling and/or transferring anything with the battery as is, and with COVID currently, I can’t go to a store and get assistance. It’s just...infuriating that Apple knowingly went ahead with not allowing 32xbit applications on Catalina, as it almost completely screws over any Music Major/producer/composer/remixer like myself. And while it’s not impossible to undue it, that doesn’t change having to WIPE the entire computer to use it again. At this point, my MacBook Air is hardly anything more than a fancy paperweight. 😣😫
