Text string search in iPhone Contacts

How can we search for a text string in iPhone Contacts? I’d like to able to type in part of a word and get results. Searching for “Howard” gives me all the howards. Searching for “oward” gives me “no results”. The text string search engine only gives results that start with that string. This is important if I am searching for someone (or something) in the iPhone Contacts and there is a possibility I have misspelled their name in the database. I also make great use of the Notes field in Contacts and know that the search engine finds results that reside in the Notes field.
