Migration Assistant issues

So here's the scenario: I got a macbook pro recently and am transitioning to that from my windows pc. I was able to setup migration assistant with no issue (I'm using wifi due to not having an ethernet cable on hand)

Started it yesterday, it made the new account, and then said there's about 150 hours remaining. There's about 800gb of data I'm moving, so I expect it to a while but I can't imagine it'd take that long. However it stayed at that point for hours with no progression. I decided to cancel it and just retry it. Started it again last night, it made another account, and then stopped at saying 172 hours remaining. I left it running overnight in case I just wasn't being patient enough. Woke up this morning and it's at the same point with no progression.

Is there something I'm missing? Any advice is appreciated? Let me know if anymore info about my setup is needed

I would also add this - using wi fi for a Migration Assistant transfer will often cause various problems, including incomplete transfer of data. I strongly urge you to go purchase either an ethernet cable or a USB cable and redo the transfer from scratch using ONLY a hard wired connection. Then it should work just fine if you follow the instructions. Good luck.

Hello psdcir,

Thanks for visiting the Apple Support Communities!

I understand Migration Assistant is stuck transferring data to your new MacBook Pro.

Depending on how much content you're transferring to your new Mac, it can take several hours for the transfer to complete. Even longer when using Wi-Fi, especially if there is any interference or drop in signal strength. If the process has become stuck, then I suggest connecting your computers to each other via Ethernet, and then attempting the process. Additionally, check for updates to macOS. You can see those and other suggestions in the following article: Move your data from a Windows PC to your Mac - Apple Support

Best regards.

"Is it possible for it to be so slow that it doesn't show any progress for 24 hours? I ordered an ethernet cable but my concern is that being on wifi isn't the issue"

Use Disk Utilities:

Mount the Drive: Is this external drive mounted? Verify if that is the case. Go to: Disk Utility (System Preferences > Utilities), and see if it as seen and if it has yet to be mounted. If it is seen as unmounted, then click Mount towards to top right of the window.

What Risk a Dead Mac?

Perhaps your Mac is a Faulty Device. You have a one-year out-of-the-box limited-warranty. So, contact Apple, and have this Mac looked at. Perhaps there is junk in the ports, or, perhaps a fan is failing, or even the builtin drive.

I. Using Send-In Service:

The only option, as of this post, would be to contact Apple, and have it sent it for service/replacement.

  1. Apple: would send you a box
  2. You: would package it and send it to Apple
  3. Apple: would fix it or replace it, if applicable
  4. You: would receive it back from Apple
