Airpods microphone volume too loud on FaceTime

I was on FaceTime with some friends when they commented about my talking being extremely loud, even with me whispering. I never noticed the problem with other apps that utilize the airpods microphone like Snapchat, but I still can't seem to find a fix to this. I've forgotten and paired my airpods again and reset the network settings, but nothing seems to work. Any help?
